How to Obtain Outrageous Goals?

If you want to become a scratch golfer, you need to walk a thousand miles in a year and raise a charitable fund of £100,000. Get the top job. Climb a mountain. What is your big outrageous goal in this vein? You freeze at the enormity of the task and quickly go in to a mode of 'I can't because' and real off all the reasons the goal cannot be achieved. However, there is only trick to break the challenge down in to manageable parts.
A thousand miles can only be achieved one step at a time and one step is easy. £100,000 can only be raised one penny at a time and a penny is not much. You reach the top of a mountain by climbing one step at a time and you know you can do each step. Your golf handicap is improved by practice and training around each shot you play and you know you have played many good shots. Getting the top job requires you to do one task well at a time and you know you can. Set the goal and then leave it and focus on the small tasks to achieve it. Take one step then another until you suddenly discover you have walked two million steps and gone a thousand miles. Yes two million steps. Even more daunting if you think about it like that but if happens if you just take one step at a time. The same is true with the other goals and your own outrageous goal. Break it down and concentrate on the smallest unit you can do. Do it and you wil get there.
When you do this you will amaze yourself, learn a lot and inspire others. You will come up against resistance as you want to give up and start to question how committed you are to your outrageous goal. You will need to be committed as any outrageous goal is outrageous because most people will give up along the way. When it comes to the test it is not something they want to do enough to keep the level of commitment necessary to do it. If you are committed and stick with repeating each unit of progress that you can achieve then you will get to your goal.
It is also OK to discover you are not really interested in your outrageous goal. I know someone who wanted to be a scratch golfer. He started practicing and taking lessons and when he realised what it required of him to be a scratch golfer he decided he did not want so much of his life taken up in that way. He wanted to play like a scratch golfer but was not willing to practice like a scratch golfer. He now plays happily off a 15 handicap and instead enjoys the shots that occasionally come along to the standard of a scratch golfer.
Go for your big outrageous goal and walk two million steps one step at a time.
